Viterbi Startup Garage is a 6 month venture incubator program created by the USC Viterbi School of Engineering that includes $20K in funding, space, strategic and financial resources and access to world-class mentors, and hands-on product, marketing, legal and fundraising support. Prior Garage companies have raised over $7Mil in investment capital and selections are made yearly.
Ignite USC is USC’s web platform for soliciting donations from the public at large for crowdfunded programs, which can include research, community outreach, education and other topics that benefit the university and our community.

VentureWell is a higher education network that cultivates revolutionary ideas and promising inventions.
Student inventors are at the heart of VentureWell. We help cultivate their skills and creativity and bring their ideas to market. Often we are first to validate, support and guide an idea with potential, allowing student entrepreneurs to take the important first step toward launching a business.
Stage 1 provides funding of $5,000 to attend a three-day workshop on how to better articulate the opportunity for the innovation in the marketplace. Remaining funds may be used to support further development of the project/product.
Stage 2 provides additional funding of up to $20,000.
The Seed Program creates, develops, and/or de-risks translational projects. Funds can be used to generate preliminary data, acquire more substantial validation data, obtain expert advice to address a defined risk, develop a business case or substantiate clinical utility, generate product development and commercialization strategies, etc. Capped at $25,000, awards are intended to achieve a key milestone or enable a de-risking activity to attract follow-on funding, including but not limited to the Coulter Pilot Program.
The Pilot Program offers grants of up to approximately $100K awarded for a one year period and may be submitted for renewal. Project proposals are evaluated by a core team on the basis of their clinical merit, their potential health care impact and significance, their timeline and pathway to commercialization, and most importantly their potential for obtaining further financial investment to translate the particular solution to healthcare.
Held annually and Trojan Family Weekend in the fall, the USC Stevens Student Innovator Showcase promotes young entrepreneurs and their cutting-edge business ideas in all disciplines ranging from the arts and social sciences to engineering and medicine. During the daylong event held at USC’s University Park Campus, student teams present and pitch their startup ideas and prototypes to expert judges, competing for cash awards that can help to develop their ideas further. In addition to the cash awards, every student participating in the Student Innovator Showcase received a Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp Small Business Starter Kit valued at $599 per kit, about $20,000 in total.
The Alfred E. Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering was established at the University of Southern California in 1998 as a non-profit organization to bridge the gap between biomedical invention and the creation of commercially successful medical products that improve and save lives. As part of its continuing commitment to innovation in engineering AMI USC is funding three PhD fellowships in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Each fellowship will provide a stipend of $33,000 per year, renewable for up to 3 years.
The MEPC is designed to support both the ideas and the innovators working to solve the most complex scientific and engineering problems in the world. The competition offers a combination of mentoring by seasoned investors and business professionals, entrepreneurial educational sessions developed in conjunction with the Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurship at USC that features a $50K grand prize.
This yearly $50k funding competition curates the best university startups at respective Blackstone LaunchPad campuses to participate in a national pitch competition. This event happens in New York City and if you team is selected, the Blackstone LaunchPad USC will fly you to compete. USC had 4 teams last year that took home 2 of the top 5 prizes available.
Put on by the Lloyd Greif Center for Entrpreneurial Studies at USC’s Marshall School of Business, the New Venture Seed Competition offers a total of $50,000 in awards. All applicants have the opportunity to attend workshops where they will be guided to refine their business concept leading to their presentation including their pitch decks for the semi-final judging round. New ventures can be from any industry. Entering teams must either have at least one current USC student (graduate or undergraduate), or a current USC faculty member or a USC alum less than 5 years from graduation.
Founded in 1993, USC Marshall Graduate Women in Business (GWiB) is a student led organization focused on the advancement of women in business. GWiB also holds an annual New Venture Pitch Competition. Teams of up to three women are invited to submit your pitch decks and compete for $40,000 in prize money.
The Ming Hsieh Institute integrates engineering, scientific and medical research to speed discovery and create the pathway by which research rapidly improves the lives of real cancer patients. We aim to target and destroy malignant cancer cells before they cause systemic harm to cancer patients, and without the toxic effects normally associated with chemo therapeutic agents.
The Hsieh Institute promises to make USC a national and international leader in translational cancer research that bridges basic science, engineered devices, synthesized molecules and materials, and medicine.
The USC NSF I-Corps Site, awarded in 2014, is proud to be part of the National Science Foundation’s National Innovation Network and specifically supports teams of USC students and faculty in beginning this process. In particular, USC teams are awarded $2,000-$2,500 NSF I-Corps Mini Grants to support prototyping and the customer discovery process.
